I get the impression that doing spark plugs on this car is going to be difficult.
Look what I found in my wheel well today. Pretty sure this was left there by the guy who did the PPI . Glad that clunk and subsequent rubbing noise weren't something more serious…

That's a squeaky clean bay, sir

It was not that way when I showed up at the dealership. In fact, there were maple leaves hiding in the cavities back by the a pillars. (And the salesman had the balls to tell me it had been garaged its whole life
after
I had seen that
.)
They
did a nice job cleaning it up before I picked up the car, though. Glad I’m not starting with 8 years of grime in my attempt to keep this thing presentable.

The engine reminded me of this

It’s not very hard, it’s just tedious. I’m sure there are plenty of videos out there to help guide you.

I feel like everybody else knows, but I don’t, so I’m gonna ask- what is that thingy?

I found a 12mm snap- on end wrench under my seat, I keep forgetting to return it to the mechanic.

E82 pretty sure he's got a 128i not a 135i.

If you’re asking about the car, Diplodicus is right.
If you’re asking about the thing I found in my wheel well, it’s a light. The power button on the front cycles between a single LED on the end and two different brightnesses of the LEDs on the front. The base is magnetic and swivels and there are magnets and hooks on the back as well.

I meant the light, should have been more specific. I figured it was probably a light, but it looked pretty funky to me. Oh well.

That whole plastic fairing that holds the cabin filter comes out giving you access to pretty much the entire engine . It’s pretty easy, but you have to make sure not to strip out any of the little plastic screw holes that old everything down.

That’s the price you pay for this sleek sexy look.
Seriously though, t he packaging on those things is ridiculous. The first two feet of the car are in front of the slam panel.

I thought it might, but it looked like there could
be sheet metal under there, so I wasn’t sure.

Once you get the cabin filter lid off there are about six screws that hold the hard plastic bottom section on. You also have to disconnect two sensors on each side of the housing. Once that is off you can remove the cross braces (need a torx bit), which then allows you to remove the rear engine cover, thus giving access to the rear spark plugs. Just make sure you have a thin walled spark plug socket, as a standard spark plug socket won’t fit. BMW’s are surprisingly easy to work on. There’s a few weird quirks here and there, but they were definitely designed with maintenance in mind.
Make sure not to force any of the covers when putting everything back together, as they are also designed to keep water out of certain electrical components. If they’re in their wonky you’ll have i ssues.

That alone is what turned me off from owning a 4th-gen, otherwise I would’ve bought a used V6 manual hardtop.

Looking at the size of the hood relative to the size of a 350, I would never have imagined ANY part of the engine would be hard to access. That’s like... short-sheeting a bed. It looks all nice and spacious until...
